Welcome to Lookout Mountain, home of world famous attractions destined to be at the top of your East Tennessee to-do list.

The Incline

The first stop on your Lookout Mountain day trip might be a ride along “America’s Most Amazing Mile.” Since 1895 The Incline Railway has been trolleying passengers from the foot of the mountain to its summit. It was promised to Tennessee as consolation for the Blue Ridge Parkway being located out of state. Originally, a 72-mile scenic corridor was planned that would hug the northern border of the Smoky Mountains. Unfortunately, engineering, political, and funding problems have plagued this project for over four decades.

Construction of Foothills Parkway began in the 1960s. The longest completed segment is a 17-mile stretch that winds its way from US Highway 129 in Chilhowee to US 321 in Walland. This route is open to the public and makes for an idyllic Sunday drive surrounded by beautiful foliage and impressive mountain landscapes.

At the point where the first completed section of Foothills Parkway meets US 321, there lies a stretch of road that has been dubbed the “missing link.” Here, construction began but was never completed due to steep and unstable terrain. Several miles of this incomplete road are open to pedestrian traffic making for a lovely wooded path along which to hike, bike, or horseback ride. Plans exist to complete of the missing link, however, it is an expensive proposition which faces political opposition from both fiscal conservatives and environmentalists alike. Still, work progresses–if at a snails pace.

Also completed is a 6-mile section of the Parkway that lies in Cosby, Tennessee. It connects to Interstate 40 and was to be Foothills’ northeastern terminus. Construction began here at the same time as at the southeastern end, with the goal having been for the two sections to meet in the middle, somewhere along what is now the missing link.

Lastly, there is a four lane scenic highway referred to as the “Spur” which is technically part of Foothills Parkway. It encompasses a stretch of US 321/441 and serves as the only direct route between Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. The Spur runs along the West Fork Pigeon River and ties into the Gatlinburg Bypass, making it as practical as it is beautiful.

<iframe

This serpentine byway, which ducks through mountain tunnels and ascends into the clouds, ends abruptly in a mere parking lot. At the far side of this lot you’ll find a steep, half-mile, paved trail that beckons to those who wish to see one of The Smoky’s grandest views.

Welcome to Clingman’s Dome, the highest point in Tennessee and the third highest elevation this side of the Mississippi. It reaches 6,643 feet and is capped off with an additional 54-foot observation tower. Here, on a clear day visitors can gaze in awe at one hundred miles of mountainous countryside, a view that extends into 7 separate states. Even on days when the peaks are shrouded in their trademark mists, this panorama is a sight to behold! The observation deck (which is shaped like a flying saucer) allows for optimal viewing, particularly of sunrise and sunset.

Clingman’s Dome marks the highest point on the Appalachian Trail as well–a journey which spans 2,144 miles from Georgia to Maine. At this elevation, only evergreen trees grow, which, in this moist atmosphere, constitute a coniferous rainforest. It’s a harsh environment where temperatures average 10-20 degrees cooler than those found in Gatlinburg. Snow, too, can fall anytime between September and May; conditions which cause Clingman’s Dome Road to be closed to vehicular travel from December until April–although, the truly tenacious can still reach the summit by foot or by ski.

So if you’re looking for an invigorating hike, a perfect photo opportunity, a romantic sunset, or just a place to marvel at nature’s beauty, take some time out of your Gatlinburg vacation to visit Clingman’s Dome. And don’t worry, if you’re not up to the trek to the observation deck, the view from the parking lot itself is pretty amazing!

Photo: <a

Still, it’s only prudent to be prepared for the worst. So here is the run down of emergency services in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

Police

Gatlinburg’s police force was established in 1945 with a compliment of 2 policemen. Today, 45 sworn officers patrol the streets keeping Gatlinburg ranked among the safest cities in America. In addition to bicycle and vehicle patrols, officers spend their time on foot, patrolling the “strip” where locals and youths like to hang out.

In 1997 the department became the first in Sevier County to receive international accreditation; at that time their Emergency Call System – wherein local hotels and motels are notified of theft or fraud and are involved in the search for persons of interest – was recognized as an exemplary program. Another program, the Citizen Out-Of-Town Checks, allows local residents to rest ease knowing the police will periodically check in on their homes while they are away.

The police department can be reached at (865) 436-5181. Or, in case of emergency, dial 911.

Fire

Gatlinburg operates 3 fire stations, providing fire protection, rescue, and emergency medical services to Gatlinburg and the surrounding areas. Departmental divisions include: operations, fire and rescue, advanced EMS ambulance services, swift water rescue, rope rescue, and hazardous materials response. Equipped with class A fire engines, tankers, rescue vehicles, a hazardous materials trailer, an ATV, and a wildlands vehicle, “The Pride of the Smokies” is ready for just about anything. To reach Gatlinburg Fire/Ambulance call (865) 436-5112.

Medical

If you find yourself in need of emergency medical services while visiting Gatlinburg please dial 911. There are numerous private EMS services in the area in addition to the 5 ambulances operated by the fire department.

For non-emergency medical treatment you may wish to visit the urgent care facility located at 2534 McGill Street in Pigeon Forge. They are equipped to handle most illnesses and injuries. However, the closest full service hospital and emergency room is Fort Sanders Sevier in Sevierville – approximately 13 miles from Gatlinburg.

Lastly, should you require aeromedical transport, LIFESTAR operates a fleet of medical transport helicopters that provide services throughout East Tennessee (within a 150 mile radius of Knoxville). LIFESTAR offers fast and safe transport accompanied by highly trained paramedical professionals.

Park Rangers

Perhaps the most dangerous part of the Gatlinburg area is the Great Smoky Mountain backcountry. There, park rangers are called upon to respond to a great number of search and rescue emergencies every year. Trained in swiftwater rescue, vertical cave rescue, tracking, and high and low angle rescue techniques, the park rangers are prepared to intervene in any number of perilous situations.

However, the park service warns that cell phone coverage is spotty in the mountains and rescuers rarely respond using helicopters or vehicles, traveling instead on foot to the scene of an accident. It can therefore take a long time before rescue personnel are able to reach the injured party. Consequently, rangers strongly encourage caution when hiking, biking, horseback riding or camping in the backcounrty.

No one plans to have their vacation ruined by an illness or accident, but when things go terribly wrong it is comforting to know that Gatlinburg emergency personnel are on hand to help out.

Why You Should Hold Your Next Business Convention In Gatlinburg

Before You Visit

Business Trip

Conference Rooms

Convention

Convention Center

Gatlinburg Lodging

Meetings

Things To Do
<guid

Hidden deep inside a magnificent cave system, left untouched and undiscovered for millenia, is America’s largest underground lake. Known as The Lost Sea, this body of water is so expansive that research divers have yet to discover its true dimension.

History

The caverns in which the Lost Sea was found have been known and used since the time of the Cherokee Indians. In the 1800s, the constant 58° Fahrenheit temperature of the caves made a perfect refrigeration system for early Tennessee Valley settlers. Later, during the Civil War, Confederates minded the caves for saltpeter (a component of gunpowder manufacturing), and one intrepid visitor scrawled the date 1863 upon the cave walls. However, it was not until 1905, when a young boy named Ben Sands wiggled his way through a tiny opening, 300-feet underground, that the underground lake was discovered.

Tours

Today visitors are invited to descend trough a small tunnel built into the Lost Sea Adventure gift shop to emerge within the enormous rooms of Craighead Caverns. Guided tours traverse the uneven ground daily (with the exception of Christmas Day) on a roughly 75 minute trek. Tour guides point out not only the storied history of the caverns–from the bones of the prehistoric jaguar that were unearthed here to the moonshine that was distilled in the back rooms–but some of the unique geological formations found here, too. Such as the anthodites, or “cave flowers,” which are so rare that it is estimated Craighead Caverns holds over 50% of the world’s known formations.

At the bottom of the tour visitors are afforded the opportunity to take a glass bottom boat ride on the Lost Sea itself. The visible portion of the lake is 220 feet wide by 800 feet long and is stocked with rainbow trout (leave your rod and reel at home because fishing is not permitted). Beneath the calm waters divers have found room after cavernous room filled to the brim with murky water. Despite using modern mapping equipment researchers have yet to discover the far reaches of the enormous lake.

Beyond the caves

While you are visiting the Lost Sea you won’t want to miss the Old Sweetwater Village. This quaint 18-century village features authentic log cabins housing an ice cream parlor, general store, gem mine and glassblower. Additionally, the Cavern Kitchen offers meals to satisfy hungry explorers.

The Lost Sea Adventure is just one more do-not-miss East Tennessee attraction you can add to your Gatlinburg vacation itinerary.
