What’s The Weather Like In Gatlinburg, Tennessee?

The city of Gatlinburg, nestled in the hills of East Tennessee, enjoys a temperate climate of few extremes. Sunny days outnumber cloudy days by about two to one, and if it is gray outside you can generally count on a storm rolling through leaving behind a majestic rainbow.

Tennessee topography affords the added benefit of either ascending to cooler peaks or descending to warmer valleys any time weather does get a little uncomfortable. This makes Gatlinburg truly a year round paradisiacal getaway. In order to get the most out of your Gatlinburg vacation try these seasonal activities.

Spring

Spring is a time of warm weather and budding flowers. Temperatures average in the 60s with crisp mornings warming up to comfortable afternoons; an ideal time to enjoy the abundant nature trails of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Try hiking, biking or horseback riding through the park forests and see how many species of flora and fauna you can identify.

Summer

Summer in Gatlinburg is hot, but not stifling. Highs that average in the 80s and occasional humidity afford the alluring prospect of water sports on the local rivers. For a splashing good time spend some time boating, rafting, fishing, or drifting  away the afternoon. This is the rainy season though, so watch out for sudden and spectacular thunder storms. Hide out on rainy days in one of the area’s intriguing museums or galleries.

Fall

Autumn is harvest time in East Tennessee. Daytime temperatures average in the 70s cooling off to chilly nights. This is a great time of year to take advantage of the rural countryside by picking yourself some fresh produce! Area farms offer plenty of  family-friendly fun such as apple or pumpkin picking, hay rides and corn mazes.

Winter

Winters here are generally mild with temperatures in the upper 40s. Of course, the higher up the mountains you go, the colder it gets. Have a wintery blast skiing or boarding down the slopes of the Great Smoky Mountains. While snow usually melts quickly in the valley, either Mother Nature or the snow machines at Ober Gatlinburg usually keep the mountain sides coated in powdery white.
